Vehicle Description 1956 Chevy, Model 210 Wagon VIN:
VB56S173842 Motor:
V8, 265 Power Pack This completely restored 1956 Chevy, Model 210 Wagon is one beautiful time capsule.
This is a two owner vehicle from Oklahoma City OK.
It was restored by the Bell brothers (2 great OK City mechanics, retired today) almost 20 years ago and has been in storage since.
It was always licensed and taken out for short drives often by Troy & Deb Bell.
The original owner was an African American woman who was the maid for Governor Raymond Gary of Oklahoma.
Governor Gary bought this car for his maid in 1956.
He didn't want her to have to ride the bus, back and forth to work, each day.
Car sold new on Oct.
12th of 1956.
Troy bought it from the maid (sorry I don't know her name, but will continue to look for her) about 30 years ago.
Who was Governor Gary? He held the office of governor from January 10, 1955 - January 12, 1959.
One of his accomplishments was to order the desegregation of the Oklahoma State Capitol restrooms.
One of his first actions was to order the whites only and colored only signs removed from the Capitol's restrooms.
He also declared his intent to make the state comply with the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v.
Board of Education, which declared segregation in the public schools unconstitutional.
The Bell boys, did a complete restoration.
The car sat for a few years in Troy's possession before work began.
No documentation or records were kept on this restoration.
Not even pictures.
Troy, is just a good old boy from Oklahoma, restoring this car for his wife Deborah.
She passed away about 15 years ago, but she did enjoy the finished product for a few years.
Though they only put about 5,000 miles on this car of 86,000 miles.
Restoration began at about 81,000 miles.
The exterior:
They completely tore the car down to the chassis, replacing most parts and repainted any parts not undercoated.
It still has the factory ordered undercoating.
This vehicle is 99.
99% rust free.
The chassis is original.
They also replaced the entire front-end with new parts.
They rebuilt the original motor (265 power pack) and the original transmission (automatic 2 speed).
The interior:
Restored to its original design.
This interior is in showroom condition.
One item that Troy, is very proud of is the padded leather dash.
Yes, it is all original and it looks to be in mint condition.
And boy, is it padded.
New seats, headliner, carpet and sun visors and some major highlights.
Radio is not original and the only part of this car, that was not replaced like original factory.
Classic Chevrolet Parts Inc.
, here in Oklahoma City sells an AM/FM radio that looks original for $206 including tax.
This '56, shifts and runs perfectly.
I drove about 20 miles last weekend.
Everyone takes notice.
What this vehicle needs to be completely perfect.
Front and rear bumper needs new chromed (see pictures).
One bad section on both.
It will someday need a new starter solenoid.
Or just have the starter rebuilt.
Fred's Auto Electric in Lincoln NE will rebuilt the original started for $125 avg estimate.
If it does start the first turn, it always starts on the 2nd.
Right rear window has a 6 long crack towards very back (see picture).
Few surface rust spots on 2 doors.
One is just a one spot the size of a pencil eraser (front left).
Other door (rear right) has a small cluster of rust spots.
See pictures of both.
That is all, unless you want the radio to look original.
My son, who worked at a few Hollywood studios, believes this would be a very sought after car to rent out for 50's and 60's motion pictures.
Additional notes:
Car is equipped with factory air.
What a luxury in 1956.
I most recently had this '56 sitting in my garage at home, for 2 days and 2 nights.
Not one oil drip.
