WHAT ARE THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION?
Investigates, evaluates, negotiates, and concludes claims including verification of coverage, legal liability and extent of damage to property, which may require contact by telephone, correspondence, or in person
Examines claims submitted by insureds and/or third parties, or such claims referred from other claim units, to determine whether additional or specialized investigation is necessary for claim resolution
Handles assigned claims and tasks, including losses which may involve large loss, multiple contacts, complex coverage issues, multiple site inspections
Prepares and/or reviews property estimates and contents estimates in loss settlements
Assists agents in the resolution of claims
WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ARE NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION?
Develops and applies basic knowledge of property damage related issues to handle claims within approved level of authority
Seeks guidance from claims management on coverage issues to determine appropriate course of action when needed
Uses various electronic resources for claim handling
Utilizes appropriate job aids, knowledge and tools to handle claims
Collaborates with other claim segments and internal partners
Reviews and confirms information gathered in initial contact and secures additional information as needed
Secures and evaluates material samples
Completes on-site inspection of property damage, prepares building repair estimates and issues claim settlement payments
Scopes and/or secures inventory of damaged personal property, enters into contents estimating platform and issues claim settlement payment
Provides claim information to stewardship claim specialist to assist in claim resolution
Interprets and applies insurance contract provisions
Communicates verbally and in writing with witnesses, agents, insurance companies, vendors, contractors, attorneys, and others in the course of conducting investigations
Documents the claim file according to the file documentation workflow and standard claim processes
Reconciles submitted estimates with State Farm estimate on property damage losses and issues replacement cost benefits payments
Reconciles invoices and receipts submitted on personal property losses and issues payment for replacement cost benefits
Works in partnership with and provides instruction to contents team
Learns and applies knowledge of state and federal laws, statutes and insurance regulations in claim handling
Learns to recognize subrogation and salvage issues
Learns and uses claims policies and procedures
Handles non-routine claims and tasks independently
Serves as a resource for other State Farm associates on claim related issues
Recommends appropriate resolution of coverage issues to management
Recognizes and handles subrogation opportunities, updating all appropriate subrogation fields and prepares file for subrogation handling
Recognizes and handles retained salvage and monitors pending salvage sale items
May assist in the training of less experienced claim specialists
Conducts special projects as assigned
Performs the duties and responsibilities of the Supervisor during his/her absence, as delegated
Recognizes and reviews claims requiring specialized handling including identifying issues that may require the use of independent experts or vendors
ITEMS OF NOTE
Incumbent must be willing to work flexible work shifts as operation dictates
Incumbent may work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, based on workload and job requirement
Incumbent may be required to work overtime
May participate in weather and catastrophe planning and response
Position requires inspecting property and casualty claims, which could include obtaining the measurements of the roof and living areas, the inspection of attics, basements, crawl spaces and other claim locations as applicable and requires walking, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, crawling and lifting objects
Requires lifting, carrying, unfolding, and climbing a ladder for inspections on both residential and commercial structures
Fulfills state licensing and continuing education requirements, as applicable
Must maintain a valid license to lawfully operate vehicles as directed/requested by State Farm
Job may require travel overnight via commercial transportation or driving motor vehicles to any office locations where the Company does business, or other locations to conduct/attend training, conferences, meetings, and/or seminars
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
These positions are for the Dubuque territory in Iowa.
-Fire Claims experience is preferred. Jurisdictional knowledge for the state the role is located in is preferred. Other factors for consideration may include: role/segment experience, job performance, current office location, and proximity to territory. The ideal candidate should reside within the territory.
-Employees may be expected to work irregular hours.
-Continued employment is contingent upon meeting the requirements necessary to obtain appropriate state(s) mandated licenses. This includes successfully completing all applicable licensing exam(s), background checks and MVR's required of various state(s). Failure to do so may result in termination.
-An employee who accepts a job offer is expected to fulfill that obligation. By choosing to rescind their acceptance of any offer, the employee acknowledges there is no guarantee of continued employment at State Farm in another role. Employees hired into a future state job role will have an incumbency period beginning on the date the Final Offer is accepted and extends to 12 months after the HR effective date, which must be met before the employee can post for other lateral State Farm positions. There will be no incumbency period for promotions in the future state Auto and Fire Claim model roles. This incumbency period does not alter the at-will nature of the employment relationship. We do not intend to allow movement from future state Auto and Fire Claim model role to legacy claim roles (including promotions).
Please Note Definitions for the Purposes of Claims Incumbency Policy: Lateral: is any movement within a job family (e.g. para professional support(e.g. PA2 to PA3), professional technical (e.g. RB1 to RB2), and management (e.g. MG2 to MG3). Promotion: is any movement between job families (e.g. para professional support to professional technical, or professional technical to management). Promotions also include movement between the MG2/MG3 job levels to MG4/MG5 positions.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
