This is a temporary position estimated to last one year.
The successful applicants will assist the Environmental Section with field work and documentation associated with various water quality permits and commitments, permit applications, landscape and erosion control planning, inspection of construction sites for environmental compliance and the maintenance of roadsides and wetlands (coordination of mechanical and chemical control of invasive species, maintenance of water control structures, etc.). This position can require overnight travel throughout Nebraska.
Examples of Work:
Assist Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) Environmental Section with landscape and erosion control design, environmental inspections, wetland delineations, stream channel documentation, and roadside and wetland mitigation bank management to include: Plant identification, soil profile documentation, ATV operation, walking roadside and wetland areas. Will be required to safely move, drag, lift, load and unload various heavy equipment, materials and supplies including cement, fertilizer bags, etc., with or without assistance. Office duties will include assisting the Environmental Section staff in preparing landscape and erosion control designs and specifications and developing documentation necessary for environmental permits.
Qualifications / Requirements:
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor''s degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to environmental assessment or compliance review principles and practices including but not limited to biological sciences, agricultural/soil sciences, geography, ecology/environmental studies, or related engineering disciplines, and one year of experience performing research, investigative, or compliance work related to environmental or other technical assessments of the impact of construction, engineering, or similar projects. Additional years of progressively responsible experience in the above work may substitute for the Bachelor''s degree requirement on a year for year basis.
PREFERRED: Coursework in Natural Resources (eg; biology, botany, wetland science, soils, etc), Landscape Architecture, GIS or related disciplines. Experience in GPS survey, Microsoft Office programs, computer aided drafting, or geographic information systems is also preferred.
OTHER: A valid driver''s license is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
