ContinuousDescription The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Materials and Research Physical Test Lab performs the quality assurance testing for many different construction materials used on Nebraska roadways.
In this position, you will help prepare tests, analyze data, and review certifications to ensure the materials submitted meet the pertinent material standards.
This job includes destructive testing of reinforcing steel, high strength bolts, and anchor rods along with certification review of guardrail, concrete and plastic pipe, and other transportation related materials.
There would be opportunities to train on culvert inspection, high mast light tower and cantilever sign inspections.

Examples of Work Working in the Physical Testing Unit of the NDOT Materials & Research Division, job duties will include laboratory testing of various project and maintenance materials related to bridge and highway construction, as well as evaluation of highway safety products and new product evaluations.
You may also assist others in charge with the evaluation and inspection of various bridge, lighting, traffic control and other structural applications.
This involves inspection of light poles, sign structures, high mast towers, timber piling, guardrail, culverts and other drainage structures.
Qualifications / Requirements REQUIREMENTS:
Experience in highway construction inspection, or materials testing, or similar material laboratory operations.
PREFERRED:
oCompletion of NDOT Math and Plan Reading Courses.
oPrevious experience in sampling, testing, inspection, or other related job expertise.
OTHER:
A valid driver's license and occasional overnight travel is required.
Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities oWorking knowledge of plant operations and/or inspections related to highway construction products common to producers of concrete pipe, drainage products or steel reinforcing and fabrication facilities.
oWorking knowledge of AASHTOWARE product software.
oKnowledge of plant operations and/or inspections, related to highway construction products,oAbility to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (typical correspondence includes contractors, maintenance personnel, plant managers, and other NDOT personnel for the coordination of testing and inspection related activities).
oAbility to read plans and interpret specifications such as NDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications relating to unit activities.
oAbility to lift up to 75 lbs.
